What is Substance Misuse?

Substance misuse occurs when someone is using alcohol or other drugs at levels that are associated with short or long-term harm. This issue is more common among adults with mental health issues. It often starts during adolescence or early adulthood and co-occurs with mood, anxiety or psychotic disorders. To add to this, the reason for this is because people use drugs or alcohol to relieve emotions.

Symptoms of substance misuse include:

  • Craving
  • Withdrawal symptoms
  • Tolerance
  • Neglect of previously enjoyed interests
  • Continued use despite clear evidence of harmful effects

Early intervention is highly important. It helps to prevent many of the long-term effects on a person’s physical health, social relationships, education and job prospects. Open-ended conversations help you to help the individual explore the issues at hand.

Globally, over 800,000 people die from suicide every year.
