Menopause affects every woman differently, yet many people in the workplace still feel unsure how to support colleagues going through it. Symptoms can range from hot flushes and fatigue to anxiety, brain fog, and difficulty concentrating — all of which can impact confidence and day-to-day work life.

Creating a menopause-aware workplace doesn’t require complicated policies — it starts with understanding, empathy, and practical support. Here are five top tips for colleagues who want to better support women experiencing menopause at work.

1. Understand That Symptoms Are Real — and Varied

Menopause is not “just hot flushes.” It can involve a wide range of physical and emotional symptoms including:

fatigue

brain fog

anxiety

sleep disruption

headaches

joint pain

low mood

These symptoms can fluctuate daily and may affect work performance in ways that are not immediately visible. Taking time to understand this helps colleagues respond with empathy rather than judgement.

Top Tip: Avoid assumptions — every woman’s menopause experience is unique.

2. Be Mindful of Language and Attitudes

Comments like “Is it your hormones?” or jokes about hot flushes may seem harmless, but they can feel dismissive or humiliating. Menopause is a health transition, not a punchline.

Using respectful, supportive language helps create psychological safety and reduces stigma.

Top Tip: If someone chooses to talk about menopause, listen respectfully and take concerns seriously.

3. Recognise That Confidence May Be Affected

Many women experiencing menopause report feeling less confident, particularly if symptoms such as forgetfulness or anxiety affect them at work. This can be especially hard for employees in leadership or client-facing roles.

A little reassurance, patience, and understanding from colleagues can make a big difference.

Top Tip: Offer encouragement and avoid interpreting temporary changes in confidence or concentration as a lack of capability.

4. Support Practical Workplace Adjustments

Simple adjustments can help women manage symptoms more comfortably, such as:

access to fans or cooler spaces

flexible working arrangements

regular breaks

access to drinking water

quiet spaces for focus

Colleagues who are supportive of these adjustments contribute to a more inclusive workplace culture.

Top Tip: Be understanding if a colleague needs flexibility — small changes can have a huge impact.

5. Help Create an Open and Inclusive Culture

Many women still feel uncomfortable talking about menopause at work because of stigma or fear of being judged. Colleagues play an important role in normalising these conversations.

An open culture means employees feel safe asking for support without embarrassment.

Top Tip: Encourage openness and treat menopause as a normal workplace wellbeing issue.

Final Thoughts

Supporting colleagues through menopause is about awareness, empathy, and respect. By understanding the impact menopause can have and helping to create an inclusive environment, workplaces can ensure women feel valued, supported, and able to thrive.

Menopause awareness benefits everyone — because when workplaces support women well, teams become stronger, healthier, and more inclusive.

Could your workplace benefit from greater menopause awareness?
Small changes in understanding can make a lasting difference to wellbeing, retention, and workplace culture.

The experience many of us recognize

Opening question: “Why do I walk into a room and feel like everyone hates me?”

Common pattern: You notice the room, and a quick, negative interpretation arises: people are judging you, they dislike you, or they’re silent because they’re waiting to criticize you.

Reality check: Often, there isn’t evidence of universal dislike. Bodies in social spaces pick up cues (tone, posture, context) and our brains fill in gaps with fear-based conclusions. This is a surprisingly universal human experience—part anxious, part self-protective

Where do these feelings come from?

Anxiety and threat perception: The brain is wired to scan for social threat. In social contexts, old fear circuits can trigger even when there’s no real danger.

Cognitive biases at play:

Negativity bias: We overweight negative possibilities.

Mind-reading: Assuming others secretly judge us, without solid evidence.

Spotlight effect: Believing others are paying close attention to us more than they actually are.

Past experiences and conditioning:

If you’ve faced criticism, rejection, or bullying in childhood or adulthood, your brain may keep predicting the worst.

Social environments that reward perfectionism or dampen vulnerability can reinforce the belief that “I’m not welcome here.”

Physiological arousal: Sweaty palms, faster heartbeat, or a dry mouth can amplify anxious thoughts, making the perceived threat feel more real.

Neurodiversity factors (more on this in a moment): For some people, neurodiverse profiles (like autism spectrum differences, ADHD, or anxiety variants) can shape how social signals are interpreted or how easily social overwhelm occurs.

Is there a name for this?

General terms:

Social anxiety: A pattern where social situations trigger fear of negative evaluation.

Fear of negative evaluation (FNE): A core feature of social anxiety, where you worry about being judged harshly.

Negative self-schemas: Deep-seated beliefs like “I’m unlikable” or “I’ll embarrass myself.”

Existential or situational paranoia (informal): A temporary perception that others are hostile or judgmental, often in specific contexts.

If it’s frequent and impairing: It could be clinically significant social anxiety or an anxiety disorder. A mental health professional can assess this with you.

Important note: Feeling anxious in social settings doesn’t mean you are “broken.” It’s a signal—your brain is trying to protect you—but with tools, you can change the signal to something more manageable.

Do others suffer in the same way?

Shared human experience, with variation:

Many people experience some degree of social-evaluative worry or “getting judged” concerns, especially in new or high-stakes social settings.

People vary in intensity, triggers, and coping styles. Some experience this more during certain times (after a major life change, during transitions, after a trauma, or during periods of stress).

Neurodiversity factor:

Some neurodivergent individuals (e.g., autistic people, those with ADHD, or high social anxiety) may experience social cue processing differences, heightened sensitivity to sensory input, or slower processing, which can amplify the feeling of being judged.

That doesn’t mean neurodiverse people “have to” feel this way, but it can be more common or more distressing for some in certain contexts. Everyone, neurotypical or neurodivergent, can experience social discomfort.

Practical steps to feel better (and regain control)

Short-term strategies (in the moment):

Grounding: Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste.

Name the thought: “I’m having a negative assumption right now.” Then challenge it: “What’s the evidence for and against this?”

Pause and breathe: 4-4-4 breathing (inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, repeat) can calm arousal.

Reframe quickly: “Even if someone is judging me, I can still handle it.”

Posture reset: Sit or stand with a relaxed but confident stance; muscles don’t lie about your internal state.

Medium-term strategies (practice regularly):

Exposure with a twist: Start with low-stakes social settings (a short chat with a cashier, a quick check-in with a colleague) and gradually increase exposure.

Thought work: Keep a simple thought-diary. When you notice distress in a room, write down the trigger thought, the evidence for/against it, and a balanced alternative.

Self-compassion: Treat yourself with the kindness you would offer a friend who feels anxious in a room.

Communication and boundary skills:

Script a simple opener: “Hi, I’m [Name]. How’s your day going?” to reduce the pressure of in-the-moment guessing.

Seek micro-rituals: If appropriate, ask a clarifying question to reduce ambiguity and shut down mind-reading: “Did I miss something in the meeting?” or “Is there something you’d like me to contribute?”

Sleep, routine, and body health:

Prioritize sleep, regular meals, physical activity, and reducing stimulants (caffeine late in the day) to support mood and anxiety management.

If it’s persistent or impairing:

Consider professional support: A therapist trained in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), or social anxiety-focused approaches can be very effective.

If you have access, a psychiatrist can discuss the role of medications or other treatments when appropriate.

Neurodiversity-informed approaches (optional but helpful):

If you’re neurodivergent or suspect you might be, seek clinicians who specialize in neurodiversity-affirming care.

Simple accommodations: Allow extra processing time, use written supports in group settings, reduce sensory overload (noise-canceling headphones, quiet spaces) when possible.

Is there a simple path to practice?

A weekly micro-plan:

10-minute cognitive-behavioral check-in: What triggered me this week? What evidence do I have for/against my fear? What’s a balanced thought I can use?

One social exposure: Plan a brief, manageable social encounter and reflect afterward.

5-minute self-compassion exercise: Write a short note to yourself as if you were comforting a friend.

Tracking progress:

Rate your distress in social settings on a scale (0-10) before and after an intervention.

Note any recurring situations and what helped or didn’t help.

When to seek help

If distress is frequent, lasts several weeks, and interferes with work, school, or relationships, consider talking to a mental health professional.

If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself or others, seek urgent help through local emergency services or a crisis hotline.

Quick glossary

Social anxiety: Fear of social situations due to worry about negative evaluation.

Fear of negative evaluation (FNE): Worry that others will judge you unfavorably.

Mind-reading: Assuming you know what others are thinking without evidence.

Negative self-schema: Deeply held belief about yourself as unworthy or unlikable.

Final thoughts

You’re not alone in feeling like this, and you’re not “broken” for feeling this way. It’s a signal your brain is trying to protect you, but with skills and support, these moments can become less frequent and less intense.

Small shifts, practiced over time, can accumulate into meaningful relief.

If you do wish to access support with this, or learn more about CBT please do not hesitate to reach out.

This week, March 16–20, we come together to celebrate neurodiversity: the rich variety of minds that make up our communities, workplaces, and classrooms. Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a time to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and recognize the strengths, talents, and perspectives that people with diverse neurological profiles bring to everyday life.

What is being celebrated

Recognition of neurodiversity: Understanding that neurological differences such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tourette syndrome, and more are a natural part of human diversity, not disorders that must be “cured.”

Reframing strengths: Highlighting the unique skills and talents often associated with different neurotypes (e.g., pattern recognition, creative problem solving, hyperfocus, visual thinking).

Inclusion and accessibility: Promoting inclusive practices in education, workplaces, and public life to enable everyone to participate, contribute, and thrive.

Community and allyship: Providing spaces for neurodivergent people to share experiences, while encouraging allies and organizations to adopt supportive policies and attitudes.

Education and dialogue: Sharing reliable information, personal stories, and practical strategies to reduce stigma and misinformation.

Key themes this year

Neurodiversity as a spectrum: Emphasizing that neurological differences exist along a wide continuum, with varied needs, abilities, and ways of experiencing the world.

Strengths-based approaches: Focusing on capabilities and accommodations that enable success, rather than deficits.

Accessible inclusion: Concrete steps to improve communication, workspace design, education methods, and service delivery.

Self-advocacy and empowerment: Encouraging people to share their needs, seek reasonable adjustments, and participate in decision-making processes.

Are there more neurodiverse people in the world than 10 years ago?

It depends on how you define “neurodiverse.” Neurodiversity refers to the natural variation in human neurology, which has always existed. What has changed is our recognition and visibility.

Diagnostic practices have evolved: Increased awareness of neurodivergent conditions, screening tools, and access to healthcare mean more people are identified and supported.

Population size vs. detection: The global population has grown, but the rise in diagnosed cases over the past decade is strongly linked to better screening, broader criteria, and cultural shifts that reduce stigma.

Not all increases are equal across conditions: Some conditions (e.g., autism, ADHD, dyslexia) show higher diagnosed prevalence in many regions due to improved recognition, while others may remain underdiagnosed in certain populations.

Bottom line: There are more people who are recognized as neurodivergent now than a decade ago, largely due to improved identification and inclusive practices. The actual underlying variation in the population is stable, but our awareness and reporting have increased.

Why are more people being diagnosed?

Greater awareness and education: More educators, clinicians, and families recognize signs earlier, leading to more referrals.

Broadening criteria and better tools: Diagnostic manuals and screening instruments have evolved, sometimes broadening the criteria or refining categories to be more inclusive.

Access to services: Expanded access to healthcare, school-based screening programs, and support services encourages families to seek assessment.

Reduced stigma: Societal shifts reduce fear of labeling, making families more willing to pursue evaluation.

Early intervention emphasis: The benefits of early support motivate proactive screening, particularly for children.

Societal and environmental factors: In some regions, increased screen time, changes in education systems, and contemporary stressors may influence how neurology develops or is perceived, but these factors are complex and vary by context.

Why are women diagnosed late (or underdiagnosed) in many cases?

Gendered presentation and masking: Women and girls with certain neurodivergent profiles (notably autism and ADHD) may present features differently from commonly studied male patterns. They may develop sophisticated masking strategies to camouflage difficulties in social situations, leading to later or missed diagnoses.

Bias in diagnostic criteria: Traditional criteria were historically based on male samples, which can miss female-typical presentations. Clinical tools may not capture the ways neurodivergence manifests in women.

Social and developmental expectations: Girls are often socialized to appear cooperative and organized, which can mask struggles in executive functioning or sensory processing until later.

Co-occurring conditions: Higher rates of anxiety, depression, or eating disorders in women can mask or complicate neurodivergent diagnoses, delaying identification of the underlying neurodiversity.

Help-seeking patterns: Girls may be less likely to be referred for assessment unless significant impairment is evident, whereas boys may be referred for a wider range of observable behaviors.

Systemic factors: Access to pediatric or adult mental health services, cultural expectations, and stigma can influence when and whether a diagnosis is pursued.

What you can do to celebrate and support

Learn and share accurate information: Use reliable sources to educate yourselves and others about neurodiversity and the wide spectrum of experiences.

Spotlight strengths and accommodations: Highlight how different thinking styles contribute to teams, schools, and communities; share practical adjustments (e.g., flexible communication, quiet workspaces, break options, clear instructions).

Elevate neurodivergent voices: Create space for neurodivergent people to share their stories, preferences, and needs in your organization or group.

Promote inclusive practices: Review policies and environments for accessibility—meeting formats, communication methods, sensory considerations, and flexible timelines.

Encourage early support and access: Provide information about screening, assessment, and support services; reduce barriers to seeking help.

Be an ally, not a savior: Listen, validate experiences, respect self-identification, and advocate for equitable opportunities without assuming you know what someone needs.

Practical takeaways for workplaces and schools

Communication: Offer multiple channels (written, verbal, visual), provide clear instructions, and allow for questions.

Scheduling and workload: Be mindful of sensory overload; offer flexible deadlines and predictable routines.

Environment: Provide quiet spaces, adjustable lighting, and reduced distraction options.

Feedback and evaluation: Use strengths-based feedback and diversify performance measures to capture varied talents.

Support and training: Provide neurodiversity awareness training for staff, with an emphasis on inclusive strategies and self-advocacy resources.

Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a reminder that diversity in how we think and experience the world enriches every aspect of society. By learning, listening, and implementing inclusive practices, we can create communities where all minds can contribute, belong, and thrive.

To celebrate Neurodiversity week, we are offering the following:

What if the real barrier to productivity, retention, and safety isn’t motivation or skill gaps, but how workplaces are designed for how brains actually work? Most environments assume everyone processes noise, light, pressure, and information the same way.

They don’t. And the gap costs organisations every day.

Here’s a practical way to think about it: when someone is overwhelmed by sensory input or cognitive load, their nervous system shifts into survival mode. Focus falters, judgments dull, communication frays, and emotions run hot. Over time, burnout, absenteeism, and talent exits follow. That’s not “them” — that’s the environment doing the heavy lifting against cognitive diversity.

The colleague who hates having the radio on, is not being boring – they are trying to focus, and the radio ‘noise’ is creating extra overload.

What we’re offering: a 7-hour Neurodiversity in Practice training designed for managers to experience, not just learn about, cognitive diversity. It’s not a lecture. It’s a guided simulation lab where some activities are in silence, others include music or white noise, and participants walk through immersive, sensory-rich scenarios that reveal how environmental factors affect performance in real time.

Watch this video – A virtual experience of autism

Why this matters to you (and your organisation)

Reduced burnout and absence: managers learn to spot overload early and apply practical changes.

Better focus and productivity: environments designed with cognitive styles in mind keep more people in a learning/decision-making state.

Fewer HR conflicts and stronger retention: teams collaborate more effectively when differences are understood, not stigmatized.

Safer environments: sensory stress factors are identified and mitigated before they become safety risks.

Inclusive compliance and talent retention: you build a resilient organisation that keeps high-potential people engaged.

Manager confidence: leadership tools you can implement immediately, with measurable impact.

How the training is structured (the experience)

Experiential simulations: a controlled sensory environment to demonstrate overload and its consequences.

Silent and sensory-rich modules: hear how different brains respond to the same setting.

Perspective-shift exercises: step into cognitive experiences you can’t ignore from the front row.

Practical tools: a toolkit you can apply tomorrow to reduce friction, improve safety, and support diverse working styles.

What you’ll take away

A clear link between environmental design and business KPIs: retention, absenteeism, safety incidents, engagement, and productivity.

Neurodiversity training that helps managers design safer, more productive workplaces for different cognitive styles.

A ready-to-run plan to implement changes: from quiet work zones and lighting choices to communication protocols that reduce miscommunication and cognitive fatigue.

A toolkit and post-training resources to sustain momentum.

Studio-level outcomes you’ll see

Managers who can recognize overload before it escalates into burnout.

Teams that communicate more clearly and respectfully across cognitive styles.

Safer and calmer work environments with measurable improvements in incident reporting and near-misses.

Increased retention of diverse talent and a more resilient leadership bench.

What next?

We’re currently booking the next cohort of Neurodiversity in Practice training. If you’re reviewing wellbeing, safety, or performance strategies this year, neurodiversity belongs in the conversation.

Reply to this email and tell us:

Your target cohort size and timeline

The KPI priorities you want to improve (retention, safety incidents, absenteeism, engagement, productivity, or compliance)

We’ll get you detailed dates, pricing, and a tailored organisational package.

Different minds don’t weaken workplaces. They make them stronger — when the environment supports them.

P.S. If you’re curious about the delivery mechanics, think of it as a “simulation lab” for the workplace. Immersive perspective shifts, sensory modulation exercises, and an adaptive toolkit to design neuro-inclusive environments — all inside a 7-hour, results-focused program.

So the days are still dark, it is still raining and you are beginning to wonder if you will ever see the sun shine… Welcome to February.

If you’ve ever heard of “Blue Monday,” you’re not alone. The term gets tossed around a lot in January or February, and it’s often described as the most depressing day of the year. But what is Blue Monday really, why does it matter for mental health, and what can you actually do about it? Let’s break it down in a friendly, practical way.

What is Blue Monday (and what it isn’t)

What people often mean: A catchy label for a day (typically late January or mid-February) when weather, debt, post-holiday fatigue, and unmet New Year goals converge to create a sense of gloom.

The reality: Blue Monday isn’t a scientifically proven event. It’s a concept that blends seasonal mood factors (shorter days, colder weather), financial stress after the holidays, and social expectations. That said, many people do feel low during February or late winter, and that’s perfectly valid.

How February blues can show up in mental health

Mood dips: Feeling down, irritable, or less motivated.

Energy changes: Sleep patterns may shift; you might feel more fatigued.

Social pull: You may withdraw from activities or feel less connected.

Productive struggle: Small tasks feel overwhelming; motivation to exercise or eat well drops.

Anxiety or stress: Financial concerns from holiday spending or looming winter bills can creep in.

But a few hopeful notes:

It’s common, not a personal failure. Mental health ebbs and flows.

Small, consistent steps can move the needle more than grand, sporadic efforts.

If you notice persistent low mood, hopelessness, or thoughts of self-harm, reach out to a professional or a trusted person right away.

Quick wins to get you back on track (practical, do-anywhere ideas)

Light a path with light

Get natural light when you can (short walks at lunch, open curtains).

Consider a light therapy lamp if you notice persistent low mood during winter (check with a clinician if you’re unsure it’s right for you).

Move for a mood boost

Short bursts: 5–10 minutes of movement a day (walk, stretch, a quick home workout).

Make it social: a brisk walk with a friend or a quick class.

Nurture sleep

Keep a consistent wake and bedtime, even on weekends.

Create a calming pre-sleep routine: dim lights, screen-free time, gentle stretches.

Limit caffeine late in the day and avoid heavy meals right before bed.

Front-load healthy fuel

Plan simple, balanced meals and snacks that include protein, fiber, and healthy fats.

Hydration matters: aim for regular water intake throughout the day.

Micro-goals, big wins

Break tasks into tiny steps (e.g., “start 1 email,” not “catch up completely”).

Celebrate small completions to build momentum.

Social connection is power

Reach out to a friend, family member, or coworker for a quick chat or coffee.

Join a small group activity or a virtual meetup to stay connected.

Digital wellness tune-up

Set boundaries around screens—especially late at night.

Curate your feeds: unfollow or mute accounts that trigger negative comparisons.

Grounding and self-check-ins

Try a 1-minute grounding exercise: name 5 things you can see, 4 you can feel, 3 you can hear.

Keep a simple mood log: rate how you feel on a 1–10 scale each day and note triggers or routines that helped.

If you’re a workplace reader or team:

Propose a “Wellness Wednesday” kickoff: 15 minutes of stretching, a quick mindfulness exercise, and a shared resource link.

Encourage flexible schedules during tougher weeks and acknowledge small achievements.

When to seek extra support

Two or more weeks of low mood that interfere with daily life; interest and pleasure in activities decline; changes in sleep, appetite, or energy.

Persistent anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or if you’re worried about your safety or someone else’s.

Helpful resources (private, free, or low-cost options)

Local mental health helplines or crisis lines (availability varies by country).

Counselor or therapist directories; many offer sliding scale or teletherapy.

Employee assistance programs if you’re reading this from a workplace.

A quick personal reflection mini-checklist (5 questions)

Am I experiencing persistent low mood or fatigue for more than a couple of weeks?

What’s one small thing I can do today to feel a bit better?

Who can I reach out to for support this week?

Is there a sleep or light routine I can tweak tonight?

What’s one micro-goal I can complete before tomorrow?

Closing thought
February can feel like a long, gray month, but small, steady steps can create real momentum. Treat yourself with kindness, start with one tiny win today, and remember you’re not alone—many people share this experience, and help is available if you need it.

This week, we’re shining a gentle light on Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) — what it is, how it shows up, and practical ways to soften its impact.

If you’ve ever felt an overwhelming wave of shame or sadness after a put-down, a harsh critique, or a small social stumble, you’re not alone. RSD is a name for the intense emotional pain some people experience in response to perceived rejection or disappointment.

What is RSD?

Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria refers to extreme emotional responses to real or perceived rejection or criticism. For some, the sting isn’t just brief—it can feel overwhelming, lingering for hours or days.

RSD isn’t a diagnosis in itself, but it’s a term often discussed in the context of neurodivergent experiences, particularly in relation to ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and other profiles where emotional regulation can be more challenging.

From clevelandclinic.org

Is there a link between RSD and impostor syndrome?

There are meaningful overlaps. Impostor syndrome involves persistent self-doubt and a fear of being exposed as a fraud despite evidence of competence.

RSD can amplify or colour impostor feelings: when criticism triggers a torrent of self-judgment, it can resemble impostor thoughts. Conversely, someone with impostor syndrome might experience RSD-like distress in response to perceived failure or external judgment.

In short, they are distinct phenomena, but they can reinforce each other. Understanding both as part of a broader emotional landscape helps in choosing compassionate strategies rather than getting stuck in a loop.

Why do people suffer from RSD?

Evolution of sensitivity: For some, heightened sensitivity to social cues is adaptive in social learning and group integration. But in a world of mixed feedback, the same sensitivity can become painful.

Neurodivergent wiring: Many people with ADHD, autism, or other neurodivergent profiles report stronger emotional reactions and more intense perception of rejection or criticism.

Past experiences: Early experiences of rejection, ridicule, or inconsistent feedback can create a chronic pattern where rejection cues are interpreted as personal threats.

Self-criticism as a default: A harsh inner critic can magnify even minor feedback into a global assessment of worth.

Are neurodivergent people more likely to suffer from RSD?

There is evidence that several neurodivergent groups report more frequent or intense RSD experiences, particularly those with ADHD and autism. This is not universal, but the overlap is meaningful:

ADHD: Emotion regulation challenges and heightened reactivity can accompany RSD.

Autism: Sensory and social processing differences can intensify the perception of social feedback as negative.

Other neurodivergent profiles: Some individuals report RSD-like experiences in relation to social expectations and feedback.

It’s important to emphasize: RSD is a human experience that can affect anyone, but neurodivergent individuals may be more likely to encounter it, or experience it more intensely, due to underlying neurocognitive patterns.

How can people cope? Practical strategies

Grounding and emotion labeling:

Name the emotion: “I feel overwhelmed and hurt by this feedback.”

Ground yourself: notice five things you see, four you hear, three you feel, etc., to reset the nervous system.

Slow down the reaction:

Practice a short pause before replying to feedback or criticism.

Use a delaying phrase: “Let me reflect on this for a moment and get back to you.”

Reframe the feedback:

Separate the critique from your self-worth. Feedback is about actions or outcomes, not your value as a person.

Ask clarifying questions to reduce ambiguity and prevent imagined worst-cases.

Self-compassion routines:

Melt away self-judgment with a brief self-compassion exercise: acknowledge pain, remind yourself you’re human, offer yourself a kind thought.

Create a personal “soothing toolkit” (breathing, a short walk, a favorite playlist, a comforting ritual).

Build supportive environments:

Seek safe spaces with trusted people who provide specific, descriptive feedback and balanced praise.

Set boundaries around feedback—when, where, and how you receive it.

Cognitive strategies:

Challenge all-or-nothing thoughts: “If I got criticized, it means I’m a failure” → “This is painful, and it doesn’t define my entire ability.”

Reframe impostor thoughts as clues for growth: “What can I learn from this feedback?”

Practical habits to reduce frequency/intensity:

Consistent routines for sleep, nutrition, exercise, and screen time supporting emotional regulation.

Regular breaks and micro-rests to prevent overwhelm in demanding days.

When needed, professional support:

A therapist trained in emotion regulation or neurodiversity can offer tailored strategies.

Coaching for ADHD or autism can provide concrete tools for managing reactions to feedback and building confidence.

A few mindful reminders

You are not alone. Many people—neurodivergent and neurotypical alike—experience RSD and impostor feelings at different times.

RSD is not a flaw or weakness. It’s a signal about how sensitive and attuned you are to social information and how your nervous system processes feedback.

Small, consistent habits often beat heroic, one-off efforts. Gentle, steady practice compounds over time.

Practical next steps

Try a 2-minute RSD reset when you notice the first sting of rejection: name the emotion, take three slow breaths, and write down one concrete step you can take.

Start a simple “RSD journal” to track triggers, intensity, and what helped. Over time, you’ll spot patterns and effective strategies.

Consider a quick consultation with a therapist or counselor who understands neurodiversity and emotion regulation. Many offer sliding scales or telehealth options.

WHO SHOULD DO THE COURSE?

When managers are supported, everyone thrives

Every great workplace starts with great managers – nearly 70% of people say their manager influences their mental health as much as a partner, far more impact than that of doctors (51%) or therapists (41%). (UKG, Mental Health at Work)

Yet, fewer than 29% of organisations provide line managers with mental health training. For those that do, 73% report their managers feel confident having sensitive discussions and signposting support (CIPD, 2025).

The gap between manager influence and manager training is widening, and it is costing employees their wellbeing and damaging business performance.

Introducing MHFA for Managers

MHFA for Managers training gives people managers and leaders the knowledge and skills to recognise when someone may be experiencing poor mental health, the confidence to start a supportive conversation, listen effectively, and the tools to signpost to appropriate help.

Building on the foundation of our MHFA® training, this course translates core Mental Health First Aid skills into practical tools for leadership – empowering managers to create psychologically safe, high-performing teams.

Through managerial case studies and scenarios, individuals embed their learning and gain confidence in how to use their Mental Health First Aid skills with their teams.

The course also helps managers set healthy boundaries in conversations and look after their own wellbeing, ensuring they can support others effectively and sustainably.

MHFA for Managers is the ideal choice for organisations that want to strengthen how their managers support workplace wellbeing.

Today I want to share a concise, compassionate look at anxiety—its long history, how our understanding has evolved, and what the current facts in the UK tell us. My goal is to help you feel informed, less alone, and connected to practical steps you can take if anxiety affects your daily life.

The Story of Anxiety: A Journey Through Time

Humans have felt anxiety for thousands of years, but it hasn’t always been seen as a problem.

Long ago, anxiety was often linked to spirits, bad luck, or balance issues in the body.

In the Middle Ages, anxiety was commonly viewed as punishment or possession, and people sought help from priests rather than doctors.

By the 1600s, clinicians started recognizing that anxiety comes from both the body and the mind.

In the 1800s, the term “nervous exhaustion” emerged, with a belief that excessive stress contributed to symptoms. Freud and others suggested hidden worries in the mind fuel anxiety.

In the 1900s, anxiety began to be treated as a medical condition, with talking therapies and medicines becoming common approaches.

Today, we understand that anxiety is normal and, importantly, that it is not a fault or weakness. There are effective ways to feel better and to manage it.

A Contemporary View: UK Anxiety Facts

About 8 million people in the UK have an anxiety disorder.

Around 1 in 7 people has been diagnosed with anxiety at some point.

Almost 3 out of 4 adults feel anxious at least sometimes.

Anxiety is more common in women and younger adults.

It can affect daily life—work, study, and everyday tasks.

Anxiety is not a weakness — it’s a real health condition that can be treated.

What This Means for You

Anxiety is common and legitimate. If you’re feeling anxious, you’re not alone.

If anxiety starts affecting your sleep, concentration, performance, or relationships, reaching out for support is a strong, brave step.

There are proven, accessible options today—psychological therapies, lifestyle strategies, and, when appropriate, medications. A healthcare professional can tailor the approach to you.

Practical next steps you can consider (whether for yourself or someone you care about)

Start small: identify one trigger or situation that increases anxiety and notice what helps (breathing, grounding, a brief walk).

Build a toolkit: create a simple plan with 2–3 coping strategies you can use in moments of heightened anxiety (e.g., 4-7-8 breathing, grounding with 5-4-3-2-1 sensory exercise, a short mindfulness exercise).

Seek professional guidance: consult a GP or mental health professional if anxiety is persistent, worsening, or interfering with daily life.

Normalize seeking help: remind yourself and others that anxiety is a health condition—and treatment works for many people.

We’re entering a pivotal moment for workplace mental health. BS 30480: Suicide and the workplace, published in November 2025, is the world’s first standard dedicated to explicit, practical guidance on suicide awareness and response within work environments. This standard reflects a proactive, compassionate, and evidence-based approach to safeguarding employee wellbeing while supporting a resilient organizational culture.

Download a copy of BS30480

Why BS 30480 matters

Sets a clear, universal framework: The standard provides consistent expectations for awareness, response, and safety planning related to suicide in the workplace.

Emphasizes trauma-informed practice: Supports staff and leaders to respond with sensitivity, reducing re-traumatization and fostering safer conversations.

Combines lived experience with evidence-based methods: MHFA England courses operationalize the standard through training built on real-world insights and validated practices.

Encourages sustainable culture change: Ongoing training (including Refresher courses) and the role of mental health first aiders help embed lasting, compassionate responses.

How MHFA England supports the standard – MHFA England courses equip organisations to implement BS 30480 across seven key areas of the standard, including:

Recognising risk: identifying signs that someone may be at risk.

Directly addressing suicide: asking open, non-judgmental questions about suicide risk.

Listening with empathy: providing a non-judgmental, supportive presence.

Safety planning: developing practical steps to reduce risk and ensure immediate safety.

Signposting to support: guiding individuals to appropriate internal and external resources.

Self-care and boundaries: protecting those who support others to prevent burnout.

Sustained culture change: embedding the standard through ongoing training and refreshing practice.

What employers should do now

Commit to a formal approach

Appoint a responsible lead (e.g., Head of Wellbeing or HR Director) to oversee BS 30480 implementation.

Establish a cross-functional steering group including HR, EDI, health and safety, line managers, and employee representatives.

Kick off with awareness and risk recognition

Run an organisation-wide awareness initiative about BS 30480 and why it matters to everyone.

Introduce simple, practical indicators of distress and risk that teams can recognize.

Provide trauma-informed, evidence-based training

Enrol managers and designated staff in courses aligned with the standard.

Ensure availability of MHFA Refresher training to maintain competency and confidence.

Normalize mental health first aiders as part of the organisational safety net, with clear role definitions and support.

Implement robust safeguarding procedures

Create or refine a formal process for risk assessment, safety planning, and escalation.

Develop clear pathways for internal support (e.g., Employee Assistance Programs) and external crisis resources.

Document procedures, ensure accessibility, and train staff on how to use them.

Embed self-care and boundary practices

Provide guidance and resources for staff who support others, including supervision, peer support, and boundaries training.

Monitor workload, burnout risk, and psychological safety indicators to protect those offering support.

Integrate with broader wellbeing and safety strategy

Align BS 30480 with existing wellbeing, health and safety, and diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Use metrics to track progress: training completion, incident response times, employee feedback, and outcomes of safety planning.

Build a sustainable culture of compassionate response

Schedule regular MHFA Refresher sessions and periodic audits to ensure standards adherence.

Communicate success stories and lessons learned (while preserving confidentiality) to reinforce trust and openness.

Ensure leadership visibility and accountability for creating a supportive environment.

Practical starter actions (0–90 days)

Complete an internal readiness assessment for BS 30480 alignment.

Select the first cohort for MHFA England foundational training and set a training calendar.

Establish the safety planning toolkit: templates for risk assessment, safety plans, and signposting resources.

Create a confidential reporting channel for concerns about suicide risk and training gaps.

Publish clear, accessible guidance on how colleagues can support one another and seek help.

Measurement and accountability

Monitor uptake: % of managers trained; number of designated mental health first aiders.

Track response metrics: time-to-intervention, safety plan completion, follow-up checks.

Gauge culture shift: employee surveys on perceived psychological safety and support availability.

Review incidents and near-misses (with sensitivity and confidentiality) to identify improvements.

What success looks like

A workplace where every employee knows how to respond to distress and suicide risk with care, direct conversation, and practical support.

A sustained, trauma-informed culture where enabling conversations about mental health becomes normalised.

A clear, trusted pathway to help, with trained staff ready to listen, assess risk, and guide toward safety and resources.

Strong leadership commitment that prioritises wellbeing, respects boundaries, and protects those who support others.
