The Health Triangle: Why all three sides matter

Your wellbeing isn’t one-dimensional. Here’s how physical, mental, and social health work together.

Hello and welcome back to the Sanitas Hub newsletter — your weekly dose of mental health insight, practical guidance, and community connection. This week, we’re exploring a concept that sits at the heart of everything we do: the health triangle.

What is the health triangle?

You’ve probably heard that health is about more than just the physical — but have you ever mapped it out? The health triangle is a simple yet powerful framework developed in health education to show that true wellbeing is made up of three interconnected dimensions: physical, mental, and social health.

Think of it like a triangle. If one side weakens, the whole structure becomes unstable. When all three sides are strong and balanced, the triangle holds firm — and so do you.

Physical health

How your body functions — sleep, nutrition, movement, and managing illness.

Mental health

How you think, feel, and cope — emotional resilience, self-awareness, and mindset.

Social health

How you connect — relationships, community, belonging, and communication.

Why balance is everything

Modern life has a tendency to isolate these three areas. We might focus on gym sessions while ignoring loneliness, or pour energy into relationships while neglecting sleep. But research consistently shows that these dimensions deeply influence one another.

Poor sleep (physical) affects mood regulation (mental) and makes social interaction feel exhausting (social). Loneliness (social) increases cortisol levels (physical) and raises the risk of depression (mental). The triangle doesn’t have separate corners — it’s a continuous loop.

Did you know? The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing” — not merely the absence of disease. That definition has stood for over 75 years, and it maps perfectly onto the health triangle framework.

The health triangle and neurodiversity

At Sanitas Hub, we work with a lot of neurodiverse individuals — people with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and other cognitive profiles — and we see the health triangle play out in particularly important ways in these communities.

Neurodiverse individuals are often brilliant, creative, and deeply empathetic. They’re also more likely to experience challenges across all three dimensions of the triangle: fatigue and sensory overload (physical), anxiety and rejection sensitivity (mental), and social misattunement or isolation (social). Understanding the triangle isn’t just a wellness exercise for this community — it can be genuinely transformative.

That’s why our neurodiversity training and consultancy programmes are built around the whole person, not just a checklist of traits or workplace adjustments.

How to strengthen your triangle this week

You don’t need a complete lifestyle overhaul. Small, intentional actions across each side of the triangle add up quickly:

Physical: Try a 10-minute walk without your phone. Notice how your body feels, not just how many steps you’ve taken.

Mental: Write down one thing that went well today and why it matters to you. Gratitude practice strengthens cognitive resilience over time.

Social: Reach out to one person this week — not with a purpose, just to connect. A voice note, a short message, or a coffee catch-up all count.
